TRELLIS ADU
When enlisted in 2020 to help the owners expand their original 1915 home for their chosen family – Design Draw Build devised an ADU that seamlessly integrates into the neighborhood’s existing fabric. Central to the design of the house was the framing of the outdoor space as a third living room, helping the ADU feel expansive and open. This detached ADU provides a comfortable and cozy one-bedroom unit to the rear of an existing single-family home in Oakland.
Tall cathedral ceilings lend a spacious feeling to the constrained footprint of the ADU, using numerous nooks throughout to make the home adaptable to the diverse needs of a small family. A wooden trellis structure across the front fascia provides filtered light to the wood-wrapped front porch. The butterfly roof captures rainwater for the xeriscape garden, while the sawtooth angles accommodate a solar array to economically produce electricity and offset usage for both homes. The same rear garden provides privacy while the abundant windows and high ceilings make the cozy space feel airy and comfortable.
