EYEBROW AWNINGS

The Gesundheit Institute is a non-profit healthcare organization conceived by Patch Adams, best known for his work as a medical doctor and a clown but also healthcare activist for over 40 years. The institute’s mission is to reframe and reclaim the concept of ‘hospital’. It intends to develop holistic medical care based on the belief that the health of the individual cannot be separated from the health of the family, the community, the society and the world.

The institute's architecture is organic, playful, and inspirational – providing an integrated setting for enhanced learning. Design Draw Build implemented patterned awnings on the walls for Gesundheit Institute Library. The awnings create eyebrows over the entire structural space – establishing an effect akin to peeling the skin of the building. The library’s design works with the tenets of the institute’s mission while creating an inspiring place for its students and community members to engage with.
