LIGHTWELL HOUSE
Design Draw Build designed this home around specific view axes, and sun angles – with an L-shaped common space surrounded by large sliding glass doors. Central to the house is a two story concrete wall, accentuated by a row of skylights slicing through the length of the home, with exposed glulam beams bridging across. The home features ample daylight, with skylights, clerestory windows, and solariums used throughout to bring brightness and fresh air into the home while maintaining privacy.
DDB is pursuing net zero operating energy for this currently under construction home in Menlo Park. Our team approached the design through a hybrid of active and passive environmental systems – using an energy model to balance these systems. The shading of windows and doors allow natural winter light to warm the space but block the harsher summer sun out. The design of the house meticulously utilizes the high thermal mass of the concrete walls to regulate temperature – providing a cooling effect in the daytime and radiating the absorbed heat at nighttime.
