GREENING THE PORT OF OAKLAND

Port of Oakland Green Infrastructure Master Plan

Design Draw Build worked closely with the Manager of Utilities Administration for the Port of Oakland to master plan their transition to renewable energy for both on-site port operations and to support a future EV trucking fleet.

This included surveying the site for appropriate locations for solar panel arrays, battery storage banks, and charging stations for both cargo handling vehicles and EV trucks, taking into consideration the existing electrical infrastructure and complexities of port logistics. As part of our deliverables, we developed site plans and presentation graphics of the proposed improvements which were instrumental in securing over $155 million in grants from the US Department of Transportation and the California State Transportation Agency to implement the project.

We also advocated for improvement to the amenities around the upgraded infrastructure as community benefits. These included solar shade canopies, free EV charging and community garden space at the Middle Harbor Shoreline Park as well as rest stops and recreation facilities for truck drivers to enjoy while their trucks charge. These parks are the only sizable parks available to the surrounding neighborhoods, but are difficult to access except by car. As part of a community benefits proposal, we proposed subsidized transit connections from nearby transit hubs.

While the Port is a major driver of economic activity in Oakland, its environmental impact has long been a source of controversy, especially for the residents of nearby West Oakland who have been most impacted. These infrastructure upgrades will contribute significantly to a healthier environment for Oaklanders and the public benefits will help them enjoy their local recreation spaces.
