The Inn at Newport Ranch- Fort Bragg, CA
In 2012, DDB built and facilitated the design of what are possibly the last ‘legal’ wood-burning custom fireplaces in the history of California since wood burning fireplaces were banned in 2008. Highly varied in geometry, size, and character they each have a distinct presence in their respective spaces. One is so big (23′ wide) that you walk through it in two directions to reach the main dining hall.
All fireplaces were built on top of a major fault line only about 100 ft. from the California Coast in Mendocino County. They therefore required extremely technical detailing more reminiscent of bridge construction than a old farmhouse fireplace. Today there are 10 wood burning fireplaces or stoves at the Inn at Newport Ranch where they warm the air and atmosphere of the busy bed and breakfast.
