BROOKLYN PRESERVE – OAKLAND, CA
DDB has been working with the owner of the Historic Brooklyn Presbyterian Church in East Oakland, CA to develop strategies for reuse that honor the historic structure by restoring and preserving many of the architectural features while at the same time planning for modern, relevant cultural programming. In many interwoven ways, Brooklyn Preserve is both an historical preservation project and an adaptive reuse project that resists the tendency to ‘condo-ize’ the historic structures in the housing deficit of Oakland and rather re-purposes community gathering around a range of secular purposes. This beautiful 1887 all old-growth redwood framed church, with a 100’+ steeple and seating for 600 is soon to be revealed in a new way.
